Dialogue with stakeholders

At Société Générale, the notion of corporate and social responsibility is primarily tied to understanding and integrating the needs and expectations of our different stakeholders, namely our shareholders, customers, staff, suppliers and society writ large.

Our "stakeholders" are all those who, whether a part of the Group or not, share the same interests, whose actions and logic are essentially coherent with ours and with whom we are able to develop a climate of dialogue and exchange.
In today's ever-changing word which is constantly exposed to new risks, our stakeholders' expectations and requirements are increasingly varied and exacting. As a responsible bank, Société Générale must constantly adapt - hence the value it places on developing dialogue with each of its partners.
Dialogue with NGOs
As a member of the Equator Principles, Société Générale's role is to develop constructive dialogue (with NGOs, Export Credit agencies, etc.) and exchange best practices.
As part of the IIisu dam project in Turkey, for example, Société Générale's met with representatives from various NGOs (Kurdish cultural association, Friends of the Earth, etc.):
  • December 2007: A meeting was organised with the representatives of various Kurdish NGOs. The talks provided a forum for the parties involved to express their concerns as to the impact of the project, to explain the role of the bank in the export loan guaranteed by the credit agencies, to establish where to find information on the progress of the project and the work carried out by the committee of experts and to review the ToRs1, particularly given the site's archaeological and cultural heritage. The export credit agencies and other banks from the consortium were then informed of the concerns put forward by the NGOs.
  • June 2008: At the initiative of the credit agencies, talks were organised between the international NGOs and representatives from the Committee of experts.
  • November 2008: Following the notification of the borrower's default on the contractual environmental provisions, a meeting was organised with a delegation of local and international NGOs. The principles behind the mechanisms in place were explained as well as the responsibilities of the banks and agencies in ensuring they are upheld.
